So, a funny thing happened the other day. The book mobile came and parked across the street from my house. That isn't the funny thing. I went in and found a neighbor of mine returning her books. I picked one of her books up that looked interesting. It had a cute cover and a catchy title. She saw me holding it and said she hadn't liked it, and hadn't been able to get into it.
Undaunted, because I like a challenge, I decided to check the book out and see for myself. I've always been a bit of a rebel. I prefer to choose for myself. I don't let my kids do this, mainly because I'm a bit of a hypocrite, but hey, not all of us are perfect.
Here's the funny thing. I LOVE this story. I haven't been able to lay it down. I love the snarky main character, I lover the story line. I love how it's building, and even that it's a bit predictable, but that's okay. It's a great summer read, on a hot, lazy afternoon.
The moral of the story is this. Just because someone tells you a book, a movie, or anything else sucks, doesn't mean it's true. You may love a story they hate. That's why I NEVER listen to reviewers. I choose for myself. Otherwise, I may pass something by that I would have thoroughly enjoyed, just because of someone else's opinion.
Don't be afraid to think for yourself. Don't follow like a sheep, just because everyone else is. Follow because you know for yourself. That goes for anything. Politics, religion, and most importantly, love.
Peace, out!

amen! and, I just love the idea of a book mobile parking by your house. I haven't seen one of those in ages...
I realize you want to believe in and follow the notion of thinking positively. This is good.
On the other hand, two iconic Canadian comedians put their own spin on the situation:
John: Only fools are positive.
Frank: Are you sure?
John: I'm positive.
I'm with you. If the critics pan a movie, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a great show.
I'll warn friends of crappy books, but always respect their right to see for themselves.
Then, if they hate it, I get to say "I told you so...."
Thats right, you judge for yourself. People say almond joy is better than mounds because you get the bonus of almonds; but I say that mounds is better because it has dark, not milk, chocolate.
Sometimes a movie with 2 stars is better than one with 3. Opera is not as bad as it sounds, there are plenty of great arias. OK?
I agree. I do book reviews just to put my opinion out there, no worries. But I do like to make my own decisions if someone tells me they love or hate something.
And you are absolutely right! This needs to be the norm in all things of life.
You're absolutely right. You're also absolutely lucky to have a bookmobile stop nearby. I haven't seen one of them since I was in elementary school. (back in the dark ages)
Good for you for giving the book a try! Everyone has different tastes.
...and the book title is???
So true. I like to decide for myself, however, when I find a reviewer who has similar taste as mine, it sure saves me time.
How awesome to have the bookmobile stop by your home. :)

This is so true. I've had both of those experiences where either I've loved a book that someone else couldn't stand or was lukewarm about or could figure what all the hype was about.
This is excellent advice, and a good example, too. Also, a good reminder for us as we experience from agents, editors, readers, viewers, etc. Not everyone likes the same cup of tea.
