Dream Big

I took my kids to see the midnight viewing of Harry Potter last night. I loved the books, but I don't dress up, or get caught up in any of that. Neither do my boys. It was amazing to see all the other teens who were dressed in capes, makeup, and holding wands etc . . .

The funny thing is, the whole time I stood there, I was green with envy. Not for the costumes, but for the passion I saw on everyone's faces. I want people to feel that about my stories. I kept saying to myself that I wanted to write a book/series that the whole world would go ga ga over. Isn't that every writer's wish? Don't we all dream to hit it big? Secretly, I do. Do I really think it will happen? Realistically? I'm not saying.

The movie was wonderful. So much better than the first half which I was not that impressed with. In the book, I couldn't quit turning pages, but part one of the film had dragged for me. The second part kept me on the edge of my seat and I hated that it had to end. It was so well done. Too bad the Percy Jackson movies couldn't be done by the same people.

Anyway, here's to all us dreamers who imagine our books on the silver screen.

I just wanted to add this video. I actually cried when I watched it.

I would love for people to love my books and characters the way I do. That would be the ultimate...

I am glad you liked the movie. Now I can go watch it on Sunday and not worry about it being disappointing. Thank you.

Dreaming is Easy. Following up on the dream can be . . . interesting, and a lot of hard work. But, still good to dream.

Can't wait to see the movie. Glad it did not disappoint. I think what holds me back from doing more writing is just that--the fear of disappointment, disappointing myself and others.

Sounds like we have a lot in common. Both on the writing front (yes, I admit secretly I want kids to LOVE my books like that...though I never want to be as famous as JKR.) And also, I wasn't impressed with the first movie either. It was very dissapointing. But I'm glad you loved the second half. I can't wait to see it.

I have to admit the last two HP films (and the first 2! LOL!) were a disappointment for me!

But I can't wait to see this last one!!

I think I aim a little lower for myself! I just like people to like my stories and not think them too bad! LOL!

Take care

I took my daughter to the midnight premier too. We also saw part 1 again right before and I was amazed to see kids dressed up and sitting in a line waiting for their seats 4hrs before it started!
Was awesome :)

It does seem akin to finding the Holy Grail, doesn't it? There isn't anything wrong with dreaming...

I don't know about being made into a movie but I sure hope people love my characters the way people love JK's. If I can do that I'll count myself pretty darn successful.

'not that I would mind a movie... :)

I know exactly what you mean. I would love to be able to create that sense of wonder.

The passion and wonder evident in faces at the movie were the same when they were reading the books. I love that stories do that to us.

Hi, Melissa. My 17 year old went to a midnight showing, too. We're planning on all four of us seeing it this afternoon. I, too, didn't care for the first half, but guessed that it was pretty necessary..
I get green with envy when I see some debut author hitting a home run out of the park with their first at bat. *sigh* Oh, well. Still living the dream, you know?
Take care,

-Jimmy

If you don't dream, it won't happen.

I do like reading Harry Potter, but I've never been able to reread any of the novels in the series. And I usually do reread books that I like, but I just can't do that with Harry Potter. Maybe because I already know all the answers that were raised throughout the book. I remember that I did stand in line for a couple of hours for the first movie. But I actually haven't seen the last couple of films in the series, though I would like to see the last one.

Hi Melissa!

Wonderful blog post and oh, so true.

J.K. Rowling has not only done so much in getting people of all ages to read - but watching her stories unfold in book form and then on the silver screen, has inspired so many of us writers, to keep dreaming big.

It can and does happen and the Harry Potter series is proof. And now that it's coming to an end, you know Hollywood will be turning over every boulder, rock, stone, and pebble, to find the next tale to bring alive.

Here's hoping, right?

Hi Melissa!

First, thanks so much for joining my blog. Its very new and I really appreciate it!

I definitely have those dreams. I am super new to the writing/publishing arena, and therefore very naive. I actually do believe that it could happen to me.

But we have to believe that of our stories, that they'll connect with our audience in big ways, because that's what storytellers do.

And I too really enjoyed the last movie. I finished the first book when I was nine. Now that the last movie is done, I feel like my childhood has ended... haha.

Great blog! Thanks Melissa!

I agree. More than anything, I think it's absolute amazing to write a book series that captures the passion of the entire world, IS an entire generation.

And that video absolutely makes me teary eyed.

I saw the film with my family over the weekend. Loved it. I'd go again if they wanted to. We'll own the DVD just like all the rest and have our own Harry Potter marathons. It's been a family story for us. Oh, I cried, too, at that clip. I also saw something on cable about the good-byes. It must be like graduation for them. Now, they're all going their separate ways. They'll never all be together again, nor in the same intense way.

I never got into Harry Potter, but she's a wonderful writer.

I haven't seen Part II yet. I thought Part I dragged, as well.

My older son and I just finished reading The Lightning Thief, and the movie is on its way from Netflix. I am sure it is nothing like HP or Rick Riordan's book; I've seen the reviews.

We all want the same passion for our books. I know I do, too.
