Anyway, speaking of writing what is not your usual, I wrote poems for each of my kids for Valentine's day. I come from great stock when it comes to writing poetry, but I don't think I'm that great. I certainly don't know the rules. I wrote a poem in one of my ms once and a gal in my critique group went to town with her red pen. You see, she IS a poet and is a creative writing teacher. I LOVED that she could help me make it better, but it was also a realization that I have a lot to learn.
My kids didn't care though. In fact, my eight yr old daughter started to cry as she read hers. It made me cry too, and that is all that matters. It's what comes from your heart that counts. And in my defense, I wrote four poems, corrected them and printed them out, AND made the valentines to put them in, all in UNDER an hour! LOL So, against my better judgment, (and please, take them for what they're worth) are three of them.
Darling girl, with the big brown eyes.
You are the sun up in the sky.
You are the moon, glowing bright.
You are the stars that sparkle bright
I love you more than I can say.
I love to kiss you every day.
I love your hair, your smile, your ears.
I'll love you more each passing year.
I'll never tire of your voice.
I'll never leave your side by choice.
I'll stay right here and watch you grow
I love you more than you'll ever know!
Cheesy, I know, but oh so true. Here's Seth's . . .
Handsome boy, I love you so.
You'll never know until you grow
How much you make my life complete
And just how fun, and just how sweet!
What ever would I want to do
If you weren't here, my Sethy poo?
I look at you and my heart sings
What happiness you always bring!
I love you, love you, love you so!
I can't wait to watch you grow.
And don't forget your mommy dear
Who loves you more each passing year!
Here's Jakes . . .
So big and strong, who is this boy?
Is this my son, my heart, my joy?
The years have flown, I blink my eyes,
But there you are. What a surprise!
You've almost grown into a man.
You're almost there, so here's the plan.
I'll tuck you deep inside my heart
And there you'll stay. How's that for smart?
I cannot bear to see you go.
But there are things you'll need to know.
You'll have to stretch your wings and fly
Out into that big blue sky.
Just know when you are on your own
That can always come back home.
I love you more than coins of gold.
No matter if you're young or old!
I started to cry when he read his. Oh my, but I love my kids.

That is such a sweet idea. Your children will always have those poems to remember you by.
:-D
I used to argue with my publisher, tell them I was NOT writing romance. I wrote romance for Silhouette. My single title books were not romance. I really frustrated my editor.
The truth was, now that I see things more clearly, I did not want to write the kind of romance they wanted from me. Today, I love writing about relationships--but it's on my own terms. One review for my novel Final Hours said I wrote a love story that wasn't a romance novel.
Exactly what I was hoping for.
I wish I could write poetry. I've tried and failed miserably. YA fantasy and paranormal is what I'll be sticking with. :) I think your poems are so cute!
Yeah, they aren't deep, thought provoking poems, but it's what I feel. =)
aww these are just beautiful. Now you've got me balling hehe
What beautiful poems! Someday they'll appreciate it. :)
Thanks for the shout out! I'm glad you enjoyed my blog post on the Valentine's Day massacre on my stomach! XD
I am a mother, your words touched me. Thank you!
Happy Crusading!
Those are the kind of things your children will cherish when they are older--either when they pull out the card and look at it or the memory of a mom that would do such a thing.
Just beautiful!
