Live life while you still have time!

I took my baby girl on a date today. She turns eight this month and is my only daughter, so I want to spoil her rotten! We went to the mall and tried on lots of different shoes then bought some. Tried on all sorts of jewelry, then bought some. SO FUN!! I was tempted to get my ear pierced up high in the cartilage area, but refrained. I've always thought that was pretty. Maybe I'm a bit of a rebel. Maybe not. I don't know.

Then I took Heidi to Iggy's for lunch. She had spaghetti and meatballs, and I had their Monteray (sp) salad. Then we shared. It was so yummy. She kept saying, "This is the best day." Then we ran across the street to the spacious Larry H. Miller theater to see How to Train Your Dragon! So flippin' good! I even cried. All that tells you is what a boob I am though. I cry in commercials too.

When we came home, we sat down on the bathroom floor and painted our toenails hot pink! We even used little jewels to make our toes really flash! What a beautiful day for me and my sweet little Heidi Ho.

The moral of the story is this. Don't just write about it--do it! So often as writers, we can think up the sexiest love scenes, the scariest thriller scenes, the saddest death scenes etc... Do we stop to live those things in real life? How hot is your sex life? If it's not hot, CHANGE IT! If you want fabulous memories, you have to live them, not just write them.

I love writing with all my heart. There is something immensely thrilling about going to la la land and creating great drama. But let me tell you, I want real memories too. I want great sex for real, great vacations for real, exotic food for real. I don't want to experience those things only in my mind.

So my proposal is this. Get off your computer and do at least one BIG thing this week. Change it up. Make your life as exciting as your books. It doesn't matter if you're a stay at home mom or dad or the CEO of a fortune 500 company. Do something different and wonderful and then come back here and tell me what you did.

This week, I took Heidi out on a date she'll always remember and next week I'm taking my kids to Disneyland for the first time ever. I'm going to live life while I still have time! That is my new goal for the rest of my life and maybe, just maybe, I'll get my ear pierced too!

Yes! Get your ear pierced up there. I did it once, but make sure you always keep an earring in, or it closes quickly. It hurts! But it is worth it. :D

I did almost the same thing with Victoria. The month that she was eight.

We went dress shopping, bought her a dress for her baptism. We got our nails done at a salon. We had lunch at the Olive Garden. Victoria got her ears pierced.

It was one of the neatest dates. She still remembers that day, more than ten years later. I am so glad we did that1

I love your suggestion to live life! I agree. It's too short and too soft to not live to the fullest.

I have often wondered if I do things so I have things to write about or write about the things I do.

They are good questions and suggestions Melissa. I am so glad you are going to Disneyland. That is so neat. I am so grateful that we have done the activities and trips we did when the kids were little.

The memories are substance to me now!

Killer post, Melissa! I'm so glad you're out living and loving life. =]

We took our kids to that movie too and loved it! (No, that's not the movie from my post.) It made me cry too.

Love the picture! Sounds like you had a wonderful time with your daughter. Mine is seven, and will be eight in July. The older she gets, the more girly things we do. She actually wore my jacket to school the other day! It's cropped with 3/4 sleeves, so it practically fit.

OH I need to listen to this post. My family went to Disney World and I hated it! I just wanted to sit down and read or write! I need to find REAL LIFE things I like as much as the story realm. Thanks for the reminder. You sound like such a fun mom!!

My baby girl is just one--so much to look forward to! She already picks out her clothes in the morning. I think we'll have lots of fun as she gets older.
